Journey Data

Collection Period: 1st March 2023 to 30th April 2024

Overview

The Cyclists are able to collect journey data for the LifeCycle Trust through a See.Sense rear bike light attached to their bike, and paired with the See.Sense app on their smartphone. Each individual Cyclist journey is recorded from start-point to end-point, except in geographic zones that the cyclist may optionally set as ‘privacy zones’.

Individual Cyclist journeys are recorded by GPS location and time.

Sensors and proprietary edge processing/software enable the collection of data insights across a Cyclist’s journey including:

  • Speed
  • Dwell-time
  • Road Roughness
  • Movement Patterns
  • Swerving
  • Braking
  • Collisions

Data insights are available based on aggregated data for different locations, times and Cyclist cohort profiles.

Cyclists can also report GPS tagged Incidents and make Infrastructure requests.

Incident categories are:

  • Close pass
  • Collision
  • Obstruction
  • Other
  • Pothole

Infrastructure request categories are:

  • Width
  • Separation
  • Parking
  • Timing
  • Calming
  • Closures
  • Other

Data insights:

Fuel/CO2 saved is calculated using distance travelled and fuel consumption of 28MPG or 10l/100km of urban driving.

Limitations of the Data

The LifeCycle Trustee notes the following limitations in the LifeCycle data contained in the Reports:

  • Data was collected between March 2023 and April 2024
  • The LifeCycle cycling cohort does not match the profile of the Jersey population.
    • It is unclear what the profile of the wider Jersey cycle-for-travel population is, and therefore we do not know how representative of this population the LifeCycle cycling cohort is
  • Not all Cyclist cycling journeys are represented in the LifeCycle database:
    • Cyclists can choose which journeys to record
    • Not all Jersey cyclists are participating in LifeCycle
